The Research Center for Crisis and Contingency Management (Director: Hiroo Ichikawa, Dean of the Meiji University Professional Graduate School) planned and held the “Disaster Prevention Specialists Training” for the 4Q of the academic year 2013, for the Cabinet Office. The training was held at the facilities of the Ariake no Oka Core Wide-area Disaster Prevention Base in Tokyo, from February 4 to March 7. The Center undertakes the training as a commissioned research project from the Cabinet Office. It aims, with the support of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake Memorial - Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution and Science Craft, Ltd., to train staff of the government agencies, municipal organizations and other designated public entities as “disaster prevention specialists” who possess knowledge and skills necessary for disaster responses.
The training consists of four courses: “Executive course” for executives of organizations, “Disaster-prevention middle managers course” for middle-class managers in charge of disaster prevention, “Disaster-prevention general course” for general staff in charge of disaster prevention, and “Comprehensive course” for improving general skills. The curriculum was structured around lectures by leading disaster prevention researchers and municipality workers who have experienced a disaster as well as practical training based on the research evidence and learnings from past disasters. People in charge of disaster prevention in the prefectural and municipal agencies from all around Japan, totaling 189 members, participated in the training.
