JABEE accreditation for the Department of Architecture, School of Science and Technology and the International Program in Architecture and Urban Design in the Architecture Program, Graduate School of Science and Technology

Jul. 05, 2016

The Meiji University Department of Architecture, School of Science and Technology as well as the International Program in Architecture and Urban Design (I-AUD) in the Department of Architecture, Graduate School of Science and Technology have been officially accredited by the Japan Accreditation Board for Engineering Education (JABEE), after undergoing the main JABEE evaluation in the 2015 academic year (category of accreditation / accredited field: Engineering Program at Bachelor level / Architecture and Architectural Engineering and related engineering fields, and Architectural and Architectural Engineering Education Program at Bachelor and Master Level / Architectural Design and Building Engineering).

The I-AUD program comprises graduate portion of the JABEE accredited Architectural and Architectural Engineering Education Program at Bachelor and Master level. It is a newly instituted master’s course in 2013 on the Nakano Campus that provides education in English. As a six-year program based in connection with the undergraduate program in the Department of Architecture, School of Science and Technology, it acquired accreditation as an education program that is in conformance with the UIA/UNESCO Charter for Architectural Education. This accreditation proves that the related education curriculum and system meet international benchmarks. It is an important first step toward guarantee of the quality of the education program at Meiji University, assurance of its internationally validity, and promotion of further globalization. It may be added that this was the first domestic case of receipt of JABEE accreditation by an Architectural and Architectural Engineering Education Program at Bachelor and Master level for a program that includes a course completely taught in English. In order to make the accreditation effective for the first graduating class of the I-AUD program, the term of validity of accreditation starts in the 2014 academic year.

Graduates (beginning with those who were admitted to Meiji University in the 2011 academic year) of the Department of Architecture, which received accreditation this time, and students who complete the I-AUD program (only those recognized as the JABEE accredited graduates) will be exempted from the professional engineer first stage examination in the professional engineer qualification system. In addition, they can receive the title of “associate professional engineer” by registering with the Institution of Professional Engineers, Japan.

The results of this JABEE accreditation were announced in March, and an accreditation presentation ceremony was held on May 25. This ceremony was attended by the Chairman of the Department of Architecture.
