Departure to Arrival

three or four months before departure

  1. Passport
    Obtain a passport. If you already have one, check the expiration date.
  2. Visa Application
    The office responsible for exchange students of Meiji University will submit the application of the “Certificate of Eligibility” on your behalf to Tokyo Regional Immigration Bureau. Upon receipt of the certificate, the office will forward it through to your university.
    Applicants then take the official letter of acceptance from Meiji University and the Certificate of Eligibility to their local Japanese embassy or consulate to apply for the Japanese visa.
  3. Insurance Policy
    Exchange students must obtain an overseas travel insurance policy which covers the entire course of study. Policy payment is the responsibility of the students.
  4. Arrangement of Air Transportation
    The arrangement of air transportation is the responsibility of the students.

one month before departure

  1. Arrival Form
    The office of The School of Business Administration will send you an “Arrival Form”. Please complete the items regarding the time and date of your arrival as well as the flight number. Details on arrival procedures can be found on the documents attached to the “Arrival Form”.
  2. Preparation of Japanese Yen
    Please prepare the amount of Japanese Yen you will need at the time of arrival. To estimate the amount of money necessary for monthly living expenses, please refer to the document labeled “Estimated Expenses during the Exchange Period”.

Upon arrival

  1. From Narita Airport to Tokyo
    After arriving at Narita Airport and passing through immigration, take the limousine bus, which is simply the bus that runs from the international airport to the city center, to the Tokyo City Air Terminal, about a one hour ride.
  2. Arrival Support by Japanese students
    Students of The School of Business Administration will meet you at the Tokyo City Air Terminal and guide you to your residence.
    If you are to live in Izumi International House, the exchange student housing located one and a half hours from the Tokyo City Air Terminal, make sure that the time and date of your arrival is acceptable to the caretakers of the residence, information of which you can find attached to the “Arrival Form”.
  3. Procedures after arrival
    1. Alien Registration
      Within 90 days after arrival, foreigners entering Japan must undergo the process of alien registration at the local city or ward office of residence. You will soon after be issued your Certificate of Alien Registration.
    2. National Health Insurance Procedures
      Foreigners who live in Japan for over one year are required to join the National Health Insurance which covers 70 percent of medical expenses. Enrollment is carried out at the local city or ward office of residence, and you are  responsible for payment of insurance premiums.
    3. Bank Account
      Opening a bank account is necessary. Details of the procedure will be explained after the arrival in Japan.
  4. Orientation
    Exchange students must attend the orientation held before the start of the term. The orientation will accomplish the following:
    1. deliver the student ID and the syllabus.
    2. check the course of subjects, and the evaluations of examination, results and certificate of credits.
    3. introduce the teachers who accepted you to the seminar.
    4. explain the computer network, library and health check.
