Purpose of Study Abroad Programs

1. Acquiring practical English language skills
2. Enhancing the capacity to understand different cultures
3. Learning about Japan from a global standpoint and considering the role of Japan in the global community


Outline of the Semester-long Study Abroad Program

Term
The second half of academic year 2010 (subject to minor changes depending on the academic year of the partner university):
The second half of the second year is recommended, but the second half of the third/fourth year is also acceptable. You will be able to graduate after four years if you get enough credits while you are studying at the partner university.
Credits

The credits earned at the partner university are recognized as credits at the School of Global Japanese Studies (maximum of 20 credits).

Costs

Costs include tuition and fees at the partner university and living expenses. There is a subsidy to compensate for the tuition and fees at Meiji University for half of the school year (454,000 yen). The costs of studying abroad shown below were as of the academic year 2009, but may change in 2010. In addition, costs for the visa application, airfare, insurance, etc., are required. Costs may change as a result of exchange rate fluctuations and personal expenses.

Features of the University
The University of Oregon (UO) is a state university with more than 20,000 students. Established in 1876, the university is located in Eugene, a city with a population of about 150,000. The partner university and Meiji University have a long history of mutual exchange. UO accepts many international students from East Asia.


State University of New York at New Paltz

Features of the University
The State University of New York (SUNY) was established in 1948 with 64 campuses across New York State. Located in a small town a two-hour drive from Manhattan, SUNY New Paltz is a small liberal arts college. It was selected as the “Hottest Small State School” by Newsweek magazine in 2008 and so is highly regarded. It has been a partner of Meiji University since 2006.

Features of the University
The University of Alabama (UA) is a state university with the longest educational tradition in the southern state of Alabama. The university is located in Tuscaloosa, a small city in a traditionally agricultural area. You will be able to take courses in the Global Studies Certificate Program. UA has been a partner of Meiji University since 2007.


Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis

Features of the University
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) was established in 1969 as a partnership between Indiana University and Purdue University. IUPUI offers courses in Japanese Studies. The university is located in a city in the Midwest, an area that is considered typical of the United States of America.

Features of the University
The University of Oxford is a British university, centered in the City of Oxford. Established in the 11th century, it is the oldest university in the English-speaking world and was ranked fifth in 2009 by the newspaper, Times Higher Education Supplement. Hertford College was founded in 1284 and is said to have the most friendly and liberal atmosphere of the 38 colleges in Oxford.

Note:
This is different from other Semester-long Study Abroad Programs. Students take special courses designed for international students including British Culture and Society, British History, English Literature, and English language classes.

Approx. USD 3,700 (Actual costs for tuition, accommodation, food, etc., are approximately USD 10,500. However, approximately USD 6,800 is expected to be paid for work done.)
Features of the Program
After a one-week introductory course at Florida State University, you will enter an internship at Disney World and also take classes in the Disney International Program. (You will work 30 to 40 hours a week. An hourly wage of USD 7.12 will be paid for work up to 40 hours.)
Features of the University
Established in 1851, Florida State University is a state university with approximately 41,000 students located in Tallahassee, the capital of the state of Florida. Walt Disney World is the world’s leading amusement park and is located in Orlando, central Florida, where most of the courses in the Program are offered. Florida has a mild climate throughout the year and is comfortable even in winter.

Note:
In addition to the selection process at the School of Global Japanese Studies, there is a final interview by a Disney World representative.

Schedule for the Semester-long Study Abroad Program (tentative)

Early October: Begin application process
End of November: Students take the TOEFL iBT exam (This is the final opportunity. Students should apply for and take the exam by themselves.)
December 21: Deadline for application
Late January: Selection of applicants (points from the TOEFL iBT, interview in Japanese/English, etc.)
Early February: Successful applicants recommended to each partner university (except Florida State University)
Late February or early March: face –to-face or phone interview by a representative for Disney World.
March to April: Note of acceptance from each partner university
July: Orientation before departure/payment of subsidy for selected students
August:  Departure
Late December to March: Return home
April to May: Debriefing session

City University of New York College of Staten Island (U.S.A.)

Features of the University
Established in 1847, the City University of New York (CUNY) is the oldest public university in the United States. CUNY consists of 11 four-year colleges as well as 6 community colleges and graduate schools. Although the College of Staten Island was established in 1976 and is thus comparatively new, it focuses on international exchange more than the other CUNY colleges. One of the attractions of CUNY is its location near Manhattan, the center of New York.

Curriculum for Studying Abroad

1. Intensive English education is offered. (Eight classes a week in the first year and six classes a week in the first half of the second year. Classes are small and are taught mostly by native speaking instructors.)
2. Courses related to studying abroad include Studying Abroad and International Educational Exchange, Intercultural Education, and International Exchange Practicum.

Security Abroad

To prevent problems for students while abroad, the university provides a variety of instructive opportunities, including the class, Studying Abroad and International Education Exchange . Students are also given a safety handbook. Meiji University is a member of the Japanese Council for the Safety of Overseas Students, which has established a reputation for crisis management for students overseas and its emergency system. We provide thorough safety management in liaison with all departments at the university, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, diplomatic establishments abroad, insurance companies, and travel agencies.
