Short-term International Student Exchange Programs of the School of Political Science and Economics

Jan. 13, 2011

As the world becomes increasingly globalized, the School of Political Science and Economics has been particularly proactive in the promotion of overseas education for students, the strengthening of foreign language abilities, and in carrying out exchanges of students with overseas universities.

- Northeastern University
We have a unique short-term foreign exchange program in collaboration with Northeastern University (NU) in the United States. Approximately 20 students from the NU visit for one month from May to June, and the School of Political Science and Economics provides special lectures for them in English. A group of “supporter students” from the School participates in a wide range of activities with the NU students. In August, the School sends a number of students to Boston to study at the NU for a month. The students from the School receive special lectures from the NU professors, and a group of the NU “supporter students” participated in a variety of activities with the Meiji students. A majority of the NU “supporter students” has ever visited Meiji University through the exchange program.

Exchanges have taken place between the School and the University of Southern California (USC) in the US from 2010. About 20 students from the USC visited Tokyo for three weeks in July and took part in special lectures in English at the School. There were also exchanges between the USC students and the “supporter students”, including joint workshops at a Meiji University seminar house near Mount Fuji.

- Yonsei University
Our exchanges with Yonsei University in Korea started in 2007, with the participation of a seminar of Japanese political history. Approximately 15 professors and students from Yonsei University have visited the seminar to discuss topics related to East Asia for two weeks. The School will start to send about 20 students to Korea to study at the Yonsei University as well as National Hanbat University for two weeks.

The School agreed to start exchanges with the Srinakharinwirot University in Thailand. Approximately 30 students from the University will visit Tokyo for one month in mid-April. Special lectures will be provided by the School in English, and a number of “student supporters” will take part in a variety of activities with the University students, from showing them around Tokyo to structured discussions of cultural and social issues during weekend workshop sessions at a Meiji University seminar house.

As well as strengthening and deepening collaboration with the existing partner universities further, the School of Political Science and Economics are expecting to expand the student exchange programs aiming to produce internationally-minded people more and more.
