The third Dean’s Speech Contest of the School of Global Japanese Studies, hosted by the International Exchange Practicum 1* (Instructor: Keizo Yamawaki), was held on Friday, July 1, at the Izumi Campus. Approximately 140 people, including students of the School of Global Japanese Studies as well as those of other schools, faculty members, and students of high schools affiliated to the university, attended the contest.

A total of ten students gave speeches in English or Japanese. Ms. Chinami Horiuchi (third year, School of Global Japanese Studies) and Ms. Minami Ishii (fourth year, School of Global Japanese Studies), as a pair, won the Dean’s Award (Grand Prix) and Ms. Eun-ji Nam (second year, School of Global Japanese Studies) won the Outstanding Performance Award.

Four faculty members of the School of Global Japanese Studies, Dean Seiichi Kanise, Professor Tomoko Himeno, Associate Professor Naoko Osuka, and Senior Assistant Professor Ryan Ward, served as judges. They evaluated the speeches on a five-point scale for content, structure, language and delivery, questions and answers, and time, respectively.

* International Exchange Practicum: A unique course that only the School of Global Japanese Studies can offer, which aims to promote students’ practical and proactive learning, such as planning and managing events related to international exchange and conducting international joint research in the field of Japanese studies.
