On the 5th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake

Mar. 11, 2016

Today marks the 5th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake and the Tokyo Electric Power Company Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster on March 11, 2011, which brought unprecedented damage. At Meiji University, the school flag is being flown at half-mast, as we offer heartfelt condolences to the casualties of this terrible tragedy once again. Our thoughts are with all those who suffered damage, and those who even now are being forced to live in evacuation shelters, and we pray for the speediest possible revival of the affected areas.

Meiji University established the Meiji University Support Center for Earthquake Reconstruction shortly after the disaster, and the entire university has joined in making support efforts based around reconstruction assistance through support, research and education of the stricken area centering on assisting affected students (including students preparing for entrance examinations) and volunteer activities (including grants-in-aid assistance for activities). These reconstruction support initiatives continue to be held this year.

Through its education and research as an open university, Meiji University has faced up to the reality that revitalization efforts are lagging. This includes confronting the issues of “initiatives to ensure that the disaster is not forgotten” and “preparing for the next disaster,” and the entire university is united in contributing to society towards a full-fledgedrecovery.
