Optical illusions created by Dr. Kokichi Sugihara, Professor of the Meiji University Organization for the Strategic Coordination of Research and Intellectual Properties (and Deputy Director of the Meiji Institute for the Advanced Study of Mathematical Sciences, or MIMS), are now being displayed at the exhibition noted below, held at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan). The exhibition is based on the results obtained in the research domain under the Alliance for Breakthrough Between Mathematics and Sciences by the JST (Japan Science and Technology Agency) Strategic Basic Research Program.
Dr. Sugihara served as team leader in the Core Research for Evolutionary Science and Technology (CREST) project in the above research domain titled “Computational Illusion – Mathematical Modeling of Optical Illusions and its Application” (2010 - 2015). In this capacity, he has been promoting the construction of mathematical modeling methodology to support the elucidation of perception and cognition, and computational theory for analysis of the same. He commented that he would be happy if people would visit the exhibition, so they could experience the wonder of vision and the power of mathematical models.
