The award ceremony for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - Student Photo Contest 2017 organized by United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Tokyo was held on the Yotsuya Campus of Sophia University on October 24. Ms. Ayaka Ohashi, a second-year student in the School of Business Administration, won the Special Award (TOGETHER Award) for her photo titled “EDUCATION FOR REFUGEE CHILDREN.”

This contest is based on the theme of encouraging students to “reflect on sustainable development goals from their immediate surroundings, express it through a photo, and share it with many others.” It is held for college and undergraduate students, graduate students, vocational school students, and other students of institutions in and outside Japan. This year, it attracted more than 1,000 entries from 73 countries around the world.
Ms. Ohashi took her award-winning photo in Malaysia, which she visited this summer for an overseas internship program. She commented that, “while refugee children tend to be cast in a negative light, I was really struck by how much fun they seemed to have every day while learning. I want to continue deepening my understanding of the refugee problem and the international situation.”
