To everyone affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and other natural disasters

Mar. 11, 2020

The time around “March 11” has come again this year. Nine years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake and the ensuing catastrophe at the Tokyo Electric Power Company’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in 2011. Having witnessed such unprecedented damage, we were once again reminded of the danger of the forces of nature and the weakness of the “safety myth.” Since then, many natural disasters have occurred, including the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake, the 2018 Japan floods, the 2018 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake, and the frequent rainstorm disasters caused by typhoons in 2019.

We would like to express our condolences to all the people affected and those who are still living as evacuees or are otherwise compelled to endure hardship.

Meiji University established the “Support Center for Earthquake Reconstruction” in 2011 but has since changed the Center’s name to the “Reconstruction Activities Support Center for Earthquakes and Other Natural Disasters” in order to respond to successive disasters. We have supported the students’ activities toward the reconstruction of disaster victims’ lives and disaster areas, and have launched collaborative programs with local governments. We will continue our support activities, including furthering disaster education in the future.

We would once again like to express our condolences and wish to show our sympathy for reconstruction efforts by flying the university flag at half-staff.
