Today, we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the foundation of our school. We spent three years preparing for this event. I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to everyone involved, including university and school staff and many others, for their tremendous support and cooperation. Thank you all very much. We have infused this auspicious occasion with various hopes and prayers. In a word, this is not simply a 100th anniversary for us. We hope that this will be an opportunity to create an even more vibrant and attractive school for the next 100 years. And we have concentrated our wish in the slogan,“ Into the world . venture into the world and find yourself .”. As you know, our founding spirit was“ Simplicity and Fortitude” and“ Independence and Self-government”. After 100 years, we are adding a new motto to our education philosophy, which is to educate individuals who can work together with people around the world and contribute to the betterment of the human society. In order to realize our wishes and prayers, we h ave planned various projects and measures from short term and medium to long term viewpoints. Some of them have already been carried out (please refer to the list of projects in this issue). During th e planning, implementation and execution of these projects, we were guided and inspired by our forefathers, including Tatsuo Kishimoto, the founder of our school, and Somei Uzawa, our first principle. We were guided by their ideals, passion, dedication and actions. Without their tireless efforts, our school would not have achieved today’s prosperity. Once again it was ingrained in all of us what it means to learn from the past and open the way to the future. For this reason, I would like to emphasize that today’s ceremony is first of all an expression of gratitude towards our forefathe rs. Furthermore, I hope that the lessons we learn from our past will lead to further progress for our school. Last but not least, as one of the hosts, I would like to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for joining this ceremony today and celebrating the 100th anniversary of our foundation with us. 福宮 賢一
