Joint Study with Brazilian Students for Mutual Understanding of Cultural Difference and Social and Economic Development of Latin America

2.Concepts and Objectives

The main objective of this course is to learn and understand the Social and Economic Development activities in Latin America. The role of Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) is presented to understand how the development activities are implemented. In addition, various development projects will be presented to demonstrate the development effectiveness. In addition, students are able to learn the role of NGO and Civil Society Groups who are the main actors for the development.
In order to understand the cultural difference, this course is arranged like a joint session between Meiji University and Brazilian University of Fundacao Armando Alvares Penteado (FAAP). In this course, students can take both Japanese and Brazilian professors’ lectures via Skype. Students are required to communicate with FAAP’s students via email, Skype, Facebook, etc to prepare of take participation of the Videoconference with Brazilian students. Finally, the course offers the opportunity to attend the Annual Meeting of COPANI (Convencion Panamericana Nikkei) held at Cancun, Mexico in September to establish the linkage to Nikkei Society through joint discussion and excursion.
This is an introduction course to join the Special Theme Practicum D “Study of Social and Economic Development in Latin American Countries and Videoconference with Brazilian Students “. After the course, students are expected to explore their own idea to support and help poor and vulnerable society in Latin America.

5 Preparation for the Videoconference with FAAP students: Rehearsal and Self Evaluation
6 Videoconference with FAAP students: Direct Dialogue and Discussion of Selected Theme
7 Review of Videoconference Experience: What was successful and what was to be improved.

9 Social and Economic Development (2): Poverty Alleviation Activities - Presentation of Technical Cooperation Projects (Video Clip)

12 Prepare for FAAP’s Mission to Japan: Support of planning of FAAP’s mission to Japan
   Coordinate and Attend the Special Lecture of FAAP Professor
   Meeting and Discussing with FAAP’s students including site visits
13 Preparation of MEIJI’s Mission to Latin America: Agenda Setting for the Discussion
14 Field Trip to Latin America: Participation at COPANI in Cancun Mexico from Aug. 31 t Sept 4
15 Presentation of the Completion of the Course – Successful Stories and Lessons Learned

4.Requirements and cautions

It is important for registered students to participate in classes and show the enthusiasm to learn the current social and cultural issues. Then, students are required to exchange observations and ideas actively within the group. Besides, students are encouraged to present their opinions and comments with Brazilian students via Skype or E-mails. Thus, the course strongly requires the English proficiency to communicate with foreign students actively in English.


Various written materials and presentation package will be provided at the class. Instructors are to arrange their materials necessary for the classes.


No materials cover all critical issues. However, materials necessary for the class are provided by instructors.


Grade Calculation is based on the following allocation: Result of Joint study (30%), Preparation for Class Participation (25%), Class Participation for Discussion (25%), Preparation and Participation to Video Conference (20%).
