Agreement concluded with Peking University to establish academic exchange Links with China and global partners advance rapidly ( 2009.7.1 )

Meiji University concluded an academic exchange agreement with China’s Peking University on May 22nd 2009.

The signing ceremony which took place in Peking University was attended by Meiji University’s Vice President Tsuneo Sakamoto who is in charge of research, Vice President Etsuko Katsu who is in charge of international exchange, Keiichiro TSUCHIYA who is a trustee and curriculum coordinator, Keiji Godama who is an administrator for general affairs, Prof. Toru KATO of the School of Law and Prof. Shinko HAYASHI who is in charge of research and strategies for intellectual property. Representatives from Peking University included University President Zhou Qifeng, Li Yu who is the head of the Japan Research Center, the vice dean of the International Collaboration Department, and the head of the Social Science School at Peking University.

Preceding the signing ceremony, University President Zhou Qifeng made a presentation about Peking University and announced his hopes and thanks for the association with Meiji University. Vice President Sakamoto also made a presentation about Meiji University and also showed his gratitude for this collaboration with Peking University. Before the signing formalities, the representatives from both universities exchanged their opinions on the possibilities for academic exchange as a result of the agreement and confirmed which fields they would especially like to see progression in. The signing then commenced.

After the signing, President Zhou Qifeng led the gathering in having lunch at the guest palace of Peking University with an atmosphere of friendship, as they celebrated the signing of the agreement. Later that evening, in return for the generosity they had received from Peking University, the representatives from Meiji University held a convivial banquet with twenty guests from Peking University which surely established a solid link in which exchange between the universities can flourish.

Mr. Godama, amongst others, said how he would like to have lively exchanges between the two universities through sports such as table tennis, and plans were also established for the vice president of Peking University to visit Meiji University. Hopes were also expressed for exchanges of academic staff, collaborations in research, as well as academic and student exchanges as a result of the agreement.

Peking University was founded in 1898, and was China’s first national university. With several key national research centers established at the university, it is one of the finest universities in China. In the Times Higher Education Rankings of 2008 Peking University was ranked the 50th best university in the world. The university is particularly noted for its School of Science, the School of Engineering and Computer Science, the School of Humanities, the School of Sociology, the School of Medicine and the forty-one graduate schools under its direct control.
