The Foreign Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mr. Sven Alkalaj, paid a visit to University President Hiromi Naya and his colleagues at the Yu Fujiwara Hall in Liberty Tower on the Surugadai Campus on the 19th of October 2009.

The foreign minister was accompanied by the acting Bosnia and Herzegovina ambassador to Tokyo, Mr. Fuad Didic, as well as the Japanese ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mr. Futao Motai, among others. The President of Meiji University, Prof. Naya and Vice President Etsuko Katsu, who is in change of research, were present at the meeting.

The two sides had a pleasant chat, and opinions on the possibilities of promoting exchanges with universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as cultural exchanges were expressed. The possibility of establishing Japanese scientific research centers at the University of Sarajevo and the University of Banja Luka, both with links in place to Meiji, was also discussed.

After the meeting, President Naya expressed his desire to press for educational collaborations between Meiji University and universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Foreign Minister Alkalaj said that in his capacity as foreign minister he would give this his full support and do his utmost to see that relations with Meiji University are strengthened. President Naya said he would relish the chance to visit Bosnia and Herzegovina once again.

Exchange links between Meiji University and Bosnia and Herzegovina were established in February of 2008 when Prof. Tetsuya Sahara of the School of Political Science and Economics visited the Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Tokyo to encourage academic exchange. Following this, thanks to the exhaustive efforts of the former ambassador to Tokyo, Mr. R. Marojevič, a Meiji University delegation led by President Naya visited Bosnia and Herzegovina in October of that year to strengthen ties.

Meiji University concluded an academic exchange agreement with the University of Sarajevo on April 30th 2009, and followed this with a similar agreement with the University of Banja Luka on June 16th.
