Graduate School of Governance Studies
The Graduate School of Governance Studies aims to develop discipline of global issues from the viewpoint of "Good Governance," where government, market and civil society should collaborate to govern society more effectively. The global issues indicate poverty reduction, sustainable development, decentralization of government, regional development for economic growth and crisis management for a safe society. In order to contribute to capacity development of prominent young professionals from around the world, the School offers three programs entirely taught in English, namely, Public Policy Program, International Development Policy Program and Community Management Program.
The Curriculum:
(1) Public Policy Program
The program focuses on governance issues of public policy and administration. The curriculum is designed to cover the process of public policy, from policy formulation, decision making, implementation and evaluation. Major courses include Governance, Public Administration, Public Policy, Public Finance, Public Management, Urban Policy and Program Evaluation. Field visits to central and local governments and related facilities are also conducted.
(2) International Development Policy Program
The program mainly deals with development policies, economic development and environmental issues in developing countries. Major courses cover a range of topics, including politics and development, economic cooperation, macroeconomics, microeconomics, fiscal policy, international finance, environmental policy and resource management.
(3) Community Management Program
The program intends to focus on global issues from local perspectives. Community management is one of key factors in realizing "Good Governance" with people’s participation. The study area includes regional planning and management, community industrialization, social development, crisis and contingency management and disaster recovery.
In addition to the above curriculum, students are required to take research method and paper writing courses, which provide a basis for their thesis under the guidance of an academic advisor.
The Faculty:
The faculty have extensive experience abroad with exposure to the actual policy making arena of government or NGOs. Those experiences will promote productive discussions among students in a supportive environment. In addition to the regular faculty, special lecturers from other foreign universities will provide seminars.
