Degree Programs in English

School of Global Japanese Studies, English Course

Meiji University’s newly-created School of Global Japanese Studies (GJS) offers a unique undergraduate program in English featuring the so-called "COOL JAPAN," starting in 2011.

Students from abroad, even ill-equipped with Japanese language proficiency, can freely explore and analyze what makes Japan cool. They can take a multi-disciplinary approach to the cultural and social aspects of Japanese society that have long been left undiscovered but are now attracting growing international interest .

The subjects range from the wondrous worlds of art, fashion and animation to the secrets of Japanese business culture and the growing impact of up-to-speed digital / mobile media on the minds of people in Japan and elsewhere. More specifically, studies on Manga (Japanese comics), Japanese movies, Japanese visual culture, martial arts, contemporary art business, software contents business, the characteristics of Japanese mass media and many more are on the academic menu.

In addition to GJS’s curriculum, students can draw upon the wide array of subjects offered in English by other departments at the university, such as sociology, political science, economics, business management and Japanese history.

For those who choose to seriously study the Japanese tongue while taking the undergraduate program, we provide Japanese as second language courses which also count for credits.
Upon successfully completing the 124-units, in the four-year-program, students are awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Meiji University is committed to creating a diverse community in race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and socio-economic background. GJS is spearheading the movement in every way. For example, GJS has the largest foreign student ratio among the departments in Meiji University. It also provides ample opportunities for students from abroad to mingle with their Japanese classmates during regular classes, seminars, workshops and extracurricular activities.

We offer a community of scholars who are preeminent in their own fields; experienced and independent thinkers eager to help students craft individual courses of study and deepen their knowledge and understanding of Japan as well as various international affairs. They embody the university’s commitment to diversity and academic excellence. With a history of personal accomplishment, they are committed to teaching and always encourage vibrant discussion and debate.

Our program is rigorous and demanding, but also dynamic and exciting. Students are bound to find a Japan they have never seen before.
