At the 2015 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Tour Grand Finals held in Lisbon, Portugal between December 10 and 13, Masataka Morizono (second-year student in the School of Political Science and Economics) of the Athletic Association’s Table Tennis Club won Japan’s first ever victory in the men’s doubles event.
In the final match, Morizono was paired with Yuya Oshima (Waseda University) and defeated the Portuguese team consisting of Tiago Apolonia and Joao Monteiro by a score of 4-1. It was the first time for a Japanese team to emerge victorious in the men’s doubles event. The Grand Finals is an international table tennis competition fought by athletes who rank among the top in terms of the number of points accumulated at ITTF World Tour events. It has been held every year since 1996. The triumph by the Japanese pair in the men’s doubles event this year was a stirring first ever feat.
