This is the university’s response to the report that foreign substances have been found within certain Moderna COVID-19 vaccine doses

On August 26, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) reported that foreign substances had been found within certain Moderna COVID-19 vaccine doses. We at Meiji University have confirmed that the vaccine doses to be used at the university’s site from September 1st are different from the ones the MHLW has identified and ordered not to be used.

However, the lot number of the unused contaminated vaccine found at the site in Gunma prefecture coincided with the lot number to be used at Meiji University’s site. (Lot Number of the vaccine to be used at the university: 3005236)

According to the MHLW, the foreign substances found within the vaccine vials in Gunma may have been due to needles being incorrectly inserted into vials. This probably led to bits of the rubber stopper getting into the vials. However, there are no safety issues and no need to halt the use of the other vials belonging to the same lot number.

Nurses at the university’s site will pay close attention to the condition of all vaccine vials and make sure that no foreign substances are present in any vaccine dose.
