On March 6, Meiji University held a social gathering at Academy Common in the Surugadai Campus, for political and business leaders who graduated from Meiji University to meet corporate and university executives. About 200 people, including Diet members, local government chiefs, and executives of listed companies, came to the gathering for the first time in five years and met with YANAGIYA Takashi, Chairman, Board of Trustees, and DAIROKUNO Kosaku, President of the university.

At the opening, YANAGIYA, Chairman, Board of Trustees, thanked the people there for attending the gathering and talked about the efforts of the Board of Trustees in this four-year term. “I hope that Meiji University will continue to thrive in the future as a university open to the world and a university that communicates to the world,” he said, calling for their continued cooperation with the university. President DAIROKUNO then introduced the efforts to achieve internationalization and promote research, saying, “It would be greatly appreciated if you could further support new plans, such as grants for studying at top schools overseas and advanced research projects in which Meiji University takes the initiative.”

“Meiji University gave me a turning point in my life,” says KATAKURA

Representing the attendees in the political and financial world, SHINDO Yoshitaka, a member of the House of Representatives and the minister in charge of economic revitalization (graduated from the School of Arts and Letters in 1980), and KATAKURA Masami, chairperson of Ernst & Young ShinNihon LLC (graduated from the School of Business Administration in 1991), gave a speech. KATAKURA said, “Meiji University gave me a turning point in my life,” recalling her school days. “We value simplicity and sturdiness, and we are strong enough to survive in any time period. I think this is the strength of Meiji graduates.” The audience gave a big round of applause.

The grand reception started with a toast speech by KITANO Masaru, chairperson of the alumni association. The people there, including political and business leaders and university officials, all mingled and had a fruitful time, enjoying conversation and actively exchanging opinions.
