Number of 2017 general entrance exam applicants exceeds 110,000

The entrance exams for the 2017 academic year at Meiji University have been completed, with certain exceptions, such as the entrance examinations based on the exams conducted by the "National Center for University Entrance Examinations (second semester)". Excluding special entrance exam and admission-upon-recommendation applicants, the number of general entrance exam applicants was 112,907 as of February 9. The total number of applicants reached the 110,000 level for the first time in five years, topped 100,000 for the 11th consecutive year, and was higher than in the previous year for the third consecutive year.

In terms of the number of applicants for each entrance exam category, the number for "Selection entrance exams" conducted by each school was 0.7 percent higher than in the previous academic year. Applications for more than one school are possible for a single exam, and the number of "All-school unified entrance exams" conducted at the three Meiji University campuses (Surugadai, Izumi, and Ikuta) and in six cities nationwide (Sapporo, Sendai, Nagoya, Osaka, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka) was 9.9 percent higher than in the previous academic year. The rate of application by high school students for the National Center Test conducted by the National Center for University Entrance Examinations (first semester) reached a record high, with the number of applicants being 9.2 percent higher than in the previous academic year. The number of applicants increased in all categories.

Among the major private universities, there are five for which the number of general entrance exam applicants is projected to ultimately top 100,000. They are Meiji University as well as Kindai University, Hosei University, Waseda University, and Nihon University. The final number of general entrance exam applicants at Meiji University will be determined in early to mid-March.
