At the end of September, distinguished Professor Emeritus Kokichi Sugihara of the Meiji Institute for Advanced Study of Mathematical Sciences (MIMS) visited Japan House in London, England, where he gave a talk and held a workshop on making three-dimensional optical illusions. Japan House London held a special exhibition on the works of the picture book author Mitsumasa Anno since August, and Professor Sugihara was invited to attend because he has created real objects of impossible pictures depicted in Anno’s works.

On September 27, Professor Sugihara gave a talk titled From Impossible Pictures to Real Objects. This was followed by the workshop to create real objects of impossible pictures which was held three times on September 28 and 29. At this lively workshop, Japanese parents and children residing in London, artists, psychologists, magicians, and others made a real object from paper that creates the optical illusion of impossible movement, beads rolling up an incline.
