The Meiji University Yoshihiro Yonezawa Memorial Library of Manga and Subcultures (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) is holding a special exhibition titled “MANGA AND WAR”. The exhibition will run until June 5 (Sun.), and admission is free.

This is a traveling exhibition that was held at the Kyoto International Manga Museum last year, which marked the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. The exhibit introduces 24 war manga works using panels and related materials, with commentary on their background. The 24 works were chosen for perspectives on six themes: the atomic bomb, special attacks, Manchuria, Okinawa, voices of the war generation, and the role of manga. In addition, a special section was prepared for exhibition of original drawings over three terms by three artists (Fumiyo Kono, Yuki Ozawa, and Machiko Kyo) who are producing “war manga” from new angles and in new ways. As an original “plus alpha” program at the Library, there will be an additional exhibition of original drawings by Daisuke Nishijima in the fourth term, presenting perspectives for reconsidering the war and the postwar period.
