To all the people affected by the Kumamoto earthquake – A message from the President

May 02, 2016

I would like to offer my heartfelt thoughts and prayers to all the people who are enduring the immense and protracted anxiety and disruption caused by the series of earthquakes in Kumamoto and Oita. I feel profound sorrow over the loss of precious lives in the earthquake, and I would like to express my deepest sympathies to their bereaved relatives.
Among the people who perished in the earthquake was a graduate of Meiji University. Students of other universities also lost their lives in the disaster. As sadness spreads throughout the region and the country, as an academic myself, my desire is to assist and understand what those affected are going through by sharing in their grief.
We at Meiji University will be providing as much assistance as we can to those students whose studies have been disrupted by the disaster, including exemption from tuition. I realize that you have also suffered a huge psychological shock, but I would like to urge you to diligently pursue your studies undaunted by it.
We at Meiji University will do our utmost to support you at any time. The disaster may impair not only your studies but also your search for employment after graduation. Precisely because of these circumstances, please visit the counseling offices at the university even more than usual and discuss measures for solutions to any problems you may be encountering. The entire faculty will be there to support you every step of the way.
Students interested in participating in volunteer activities are also asked to first consult the university. If you will be engaging in activities in the affected areas, please ensure your own safety, take good physical and mental care of yourself, and communicate with people in these areas as you work.
Some people have had their homes destroyed, while others whose homes were not destroyed are nevertheless barely managing to subsist.
With aftershocks still continuing, the situation is as yet unpredictable, but it is my earnest wish that these will come to an end and for life to return to normal as quickly as possible.
President, Meiji University
Keiichirou Tsuchiya
