Yukiya Uda (2nd year in the School of Commerce) and Shunsuke Togami (2nd year in the School of Political Science and Economics) captured bronze medals in the men’s doubles event on November 28, the 6th day of the 2021 World Table Tennis Championships (November 23 - 29 in Houston, USA). This was the duo’s debut appearance on the world championships.
In their first match of the tournament, Uda and Togami defeated the international pairing of Robin Devos (Belgium) and Benedek Olah (Finland). They followed by collecting victories over fellow Japanese duo Tomokazu Harimoto and Masataka Morizono (graduated from School of Political Science and Economics in 2018) and the English pairing of Paul Drinkhall and Liam Pitchford. However, they fell in the semifinals to Jang Woojin and Lim Jonghoon of South Korea, resulting in a third-place finish.
Four of the five male athletes who represented Japan at the world championships have connections to Meiji University. In addition to Yukiya Uda (2nd year in the School of Commerce), Shunsuke Togami (2nd year in the School of Political Science and Economics) and Masataka Morizono (graduated from School of Political Science and Economics in 2018), Koki Niwa (graduated from School of Political Science and Economics in 2017).
