A student group from the Structural Dynamics Laboratory (Professor KOBAYASHI Masahito) in the Department of Architecture, School of Science and Technology, won the Concept Prize in the Ice Cream Stick Bridge Contest, a structural idea competition organized by the Japan Structural Consultants Association (JSCA).
In this competition, the functionality and design of a bridge, constructed using commercially available ice cream sticks and measuring one ken (1.82 m) in length, were evaluated.
A unique structure was designed by creating a box cross-section using panel units woven from ice cream sticks, and its concept received high praise. It was also selected as the second-best bridge in the popular vote The Bridge That Amazed Me (Part 3: Category 1, second half).
The project received high praise in a competition where structural design professionals belonged to a company also participated, leading to this award.
