On September 19, the Student Support Office held a ceremony and exchange meeting for Oh-Meiji Scholarship winners at the Izumi Campus, where 112 winners from the first year to fourth year participated.
The Oh-Meiji Scholarship is a scholarship program founded independently by Meiji University in FY2019 and requires reservation prior to admission. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial support to students who are academically excellent but in financial need. If a student meets the criteria of financial status and academic performance, the scholarship is provided continuously for four years while the student is in university.
Tuition fees are reduced to a level practically comparable to those of national and public universities because the scholarship is equivalent to 1/2 of annual tuition fees and does not need to be paid back. The maximum number of recipients is 1,000, and, in addition, for the students who will enroll in FY2025, the financial criteria applicable to areas other than the Tokyo metropolitan area have been relaxed, which makes it easier for applicants to apply for the program.
In a speech at the beginning of the ceremony, Student Support Office Manager SUDO Hiroki said, with expectations, “I hope that you will be connected beyond the boundaries of schools, departments, and grades as friends meeting through the Oh-Meiji Scholarship and use this scholarship for your valuable student life to expand your potential.” At the exchange meeting, the scholarship winners, who gathered at Meiji University from across Japan, interacted with each other by participating in group games, such as quizzes about Meiji University.
Participants said, for example, “I had financial concerns as a single-mother family, but thanks to the scholarship, I have been able to live a fulfilling student life with less burden on the family budget,” and, “Because I don’t have to worry about the burden on the family budget, I am able to fulfill my student life.”
The Oh-Meiji Scholarship is partly financed from donations given to the university. We will continue to develop scholarship programs so that as many students as possible can study with peace of mind.
