Hilltop Hotel

On November 15, Meiji University Incorporated acquired the land and buildings on which Hilltop Hotel, which is known to have been used by many great literary figures such as KAWABATA Yasunari, MISHIMA Yukio, and IKENAMI Shotaro, is located.

In 2031, Meiji University will celebrate 150 years since its foundation. As part of the commemorative project, Meiji University acquired the property and will carry out redevelopment. After carrying out the necessary renovation work while maintaining the present appearance of Hilltop Hotel, we are considering continuing the hotel business in cooperation with a company from the hotel industry, and also using it as a function for student support, as well as a function for cooperation with the community and society. We intend to inherit Hilltop Hotel as a new symbol of Meiji University.

The History of Hilltop Hotel and its connection to Meiji University
The original Hilltop Hotel was designed in 1937 by the American architect William Merrell Vories, and built under the name of SATO Shinko Seikatsu Kan (SATO New Lifestyle Center) as the headquarters of the Great Japan Living Association, a nationwide organization dedicated to improving the lives of the needy at the time, based on a donation from SATO Keitaro, a 1890 graduate of Meiji University who also supported the construction of the school building for the Women’s Division of the Specialty Department. During the war, it was taken over by the former Navy, and after the war, it was taken over by GHQ, and it was used as a dormitory for WAC (U.S. Women’s Army Corps). Later, it was returned to the SATO Family, and it became Hilltop Hotel in January 1954.
