Professor ONO Yumie introduces a case study of joint research with St. Marianna University School of Medicine

Meiji University and St. Marianna University School of Medicine held a joint research meeting on September 7 at the Education Building of St. Marianna University School of Medicine in Kawasaki City. This research meeting was launched by the conclusion of a comprehensive agreement between Meiji University and St. Marianna University School of Medicine in 2013 with the aim of matching the needs of the medical field with the research seeds (research seed events) of universities. This time is the seventh meeting of the joint research meeting.

Dr. KITAGAWA Hiroaki, the President of St. Marianna University School of Medicine, and Dr. TACHIKAWA Maki, the Dean of the School of Science and Technology of Meiji University, opened the session with a speech. Dr. TACHIKAWA expressed his expectations for the future as follows: “In such an open exchange of information, it is a meaningful opportunity to learn not only the results of research but also the processes. I hope that sharing needs and seeds will lead to solving problems in the medical field and the development of research at universities.”

In the first session, Professor ONO Yumie of the Department of Electronics and Bioinformatics, the School of Science and Technology, who was inspired by this research meeting and is conducting joint research with St. Marianna University School of Medicine, introduced a research case titled “Noninvasive quantitative evaluation of peripheral circulation by optical technology and its application to hemodialysis monitoring.” Professor ONO expressed her gratitude as follows: “Graduate students are conducting research together with medical doctors. It has been very meaningful from an educational perspective.”

In the second session, a poster session of both universities was held, which also served as a research exchange meeting. Researchers from St. Marianna University School of Medicine introduced the needs and research cases of a wide range of medical fields, including pediatrics, neurology, and otolaryngology. From Meiji University, researchers related to the needs presented in advance from St. Marianna University School of Medicine introduced research cases from the perspectives of engineering, chemistry, and machine learning, and there was a lively question-and-answer session among researchers.
