A Project-Based Learning (PBL) lecture “Revealing Backgrounds of Redevelopments in the Shibuya Station Central District~What is different in Redevelopment of Shibuya?~” was given by TANAKA Tomoaki, Professor of the School of Science and Technology on April 9 at Shibuya QWS, a co-creation facility in Shibuya Scramble Square (Shibuya City, Tokyo).
Professor TANAKA explained in English an image of town planning integrated with the station, differences between the redevelopment of the central area of Shibuya Station and the area of Otemachi-Marunouchi-Yurakucho, as well as the discussions and results at the council for designing the Shibuya Station central area, of which he is a member. After the lecture, he took a tour of the redevelopment area around Shibuya Station with the cooperation of Tokyu Corporation and other companies. The Professor used this urban development symbolizing the new Shibuya, such as the regeneration of the space along Shibuya River while inheriting the memories of the past city, as a living teaching tool.
The lecture was attended by a number of faculty members and students from Tamkang University in Taiwan. One student who participated said, “It was an opportunity to learn about the current state of urban development in Japan and to think about what should be done to solve the problems facing each country in the future in light of the current state of each country.” After the lecture, Professor TANAKA exchanged opinions with researchers from other universities, which is unique to SHIBUYA QWS.
