Meiji University applied for and was adopted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) Ordinance of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology for “Support 2: Support for strengthening functions for securing advanced information professionals” of the FY2024 Support Program for Enhancing the Functions of Universities and Technical Colleges. In this program, the government will establish a fund to provide flexible and continuous support to universities for the development of highly specialized human resources who will lead growth fields such as digital green.
Of the total 26 universities adopted as “Support 2 universities (general quota)” this year, five are private universities, including Meiji University. The University will increase the number of full-time faculty members in the Graduate School of Advanced Mathematical Sciences and the School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences and further enhance related subjects by academic year 2031.
Outline of the MEXT program
Systematize and strengthen education related to mathematics, data science, and artificial intelligence with the aim of fostering advanced digital human resources with both a bird’s eye view, universal perspective, and practical skills based on mathematical science.
Specifically, the program aims to develop human resources who can learn mathematics and information technology that form the basis of data science and artificial intelligence, understand the mathematical limitations of data analysis methods, and have the ability to design and program algorithms for problems that cannot be handled by off-the-shelf package software through knowledge of optimization algorithms and experience in machine learning programming, by utilizing the existing education and research resources of the Graduate School of Advanced Mathematical Sciences.
At the same time, establish a system of general-purpose data analysis and AI knowledge and skills that will be applicable over the medium to long term. To this end, we aim to establish a new course in the Mathematical Sciences Program of the Graduate School of Advanced Mathematical Sciences, as well as a new cross-divisional “mathematical data science artificial intelligence expert level program.”
We will build an educational system that enables students not only to master AI and machine learning, but also to learn the fundamentals of mathematics and information, which are the principles of AI and machine learning, and that these are applied and developed to meet the needs of society in the future.
