Finally, a commemorative gift was presented
On May 19, the Counsellor of the Irish Embassy in Japan, Owen Murphy, visited the Ikuta campus and gave a special lecture titled “Ireland: Sustainable agriculture and food production systems.” This lecture was organized by Professor SAKUYAMA Takumi of the School of Agriculture, who was responsible for bilateral relations with EU member states as an international negotiator for the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and has accompanied the Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries on visits to Ireland. Mr. Murphy was invited to give a lecture as part of Professor SAKUYAMA’s course on the Food Trade Theory, which was attended by approximately 170 students.

Counsellor Murphy is from the Irish Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and took up his post as Counsellor for Agriculture and Fisheries at the Embassy of Ireland in Japan in August 2023. During the lecture, the Counsellor introduced “Basic information about Ireland,” “Relations with Japan,” and “Features of Irish Agriculture and Food.” He also explained Ireland’s Food Vision 2030, which was formulated with the aim of making Ireland a global leader in sustainable agriculture by 2030.
Special lecture
During the question-and-answer session, students asked many questions about the differences between agriculture and food in Ireland and Japan, as well as measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Ireland, where livestock farming is thriving. Finally, Professor SAKUYAMA presented Counsellor Murphy with an original commemorative gift from Meiji University, and the special lecture ended on a high note.
