[School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences] The Electric Salt device, wins Good Design Gold Award — Equipped with technology developed by the Miyashita Laboratory, achieving both salt reduction and superior taste

Kirin Holdings Company, Limited’s salt-reduction support tableware, Electric Salt, received the Good Design Gold Award at the 2025 Good Design Award, organized by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP). The product was selected as one of the Good Design Best 100 and, among them, was chosen as one of the 19 recipients of the Good Design Gold Award for outstanding design.

The Electric Salt, a joint research product between MIYASHITA Homei Laboratory in the Department of Frontier Media Science, School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences, and Kirin Holdings Company, Limited. The Electric Salt Spoon is a tableware-type device that enhances the taste of food, such as saltiness and umami, by sending a weak electric current through the tip of the spoon to the food. Even those who think a low-salt food is not good enough can feel a strong taste by using the Electric Salt Spoon. There are two types—a spoon and a cup—and they can be used with both solid and liquid foods.

The judges praised it as an extremely innovative product that incorporates electric taste technology into tableware to enhance saltiness and help people effortlessly adopt a low-salt foods.
