Nov. 05, 2025
Meiji University Library has made special materials from medieval Europe and the late Edo period acquired through the Meiji University Library Promotion Fund available through the Meiji University Digital Archive.
The fund was established in academic year 2018 with the aim of inheriting academic materials, maintaining and expanding unique collections, and developing library environments. The cumulative total of donations to date has reached approximately 25 million yen. This time, the following two items were collected as special materials.
The History of the Monarchs of Britain
This book, which deals with the history of the British Isles, widely circulated as a manuscript copy in medieval Europe and exerted a significant influence on later literature. The item collected this time is the first edition published in 1508 (full text in Latin), printed and published by Jodocus Badius, a printing house owner in Paris.
Late period gesaku (popular fiction) collection (nine items in total)
Meiji University Library has collected four kibyōshi (illustrated fiction), two gōkan (multi-volume illustrated fiction), one sharebon (witty urban fiction), one kokkeibon (comic fiction), and one jōruri (ballad drama) from the gesaku (popular fiction) literature that flourished in the late Edo period, focusing primarily on works by SANTO Kyoden and KYOKUTEI Bakin. In the future, these books will be incorporated into Meiji University Library's distinctive collection, the Edo Period Literary Arts Library , and the collection is expected to be further enriched.
