Professor KUSUNOSE Hiroaki at the Department of Physics of the School of Science and Technology, received the 2024 Meiji University Keiji Kodama “Ganbaru” Research Promotion Award, and the award ceremony was held on July 28 at the Shikonn Kan Alumni Memorial Building on the Surugadai Campus.

This award, established through a donation from a Meiji University alumnus, Mr. KODAMA Keiji (1957 graduate of the School of Business Administration), commends Meiji University’s faculty members who have made remarkable achievements in research. The award winners are selected by evaluating metrics, such as the number of papers and number of citation counts of international research papers, over the past five years.

Professor Kusunose’s research fields are condensed matter theory, as well as magnetism and superconductivity theory. Two of his papers published in the English-language journal of the Physical Society of Japan were selected for “The top 10 JPSJ articles that were most frequently cited in 2024,” earning him high recognition worldwide.

At the award ceremony, after a certificate of commendation and a list of prizes were given, President UENO gave a speech and then Mr. KODAMA took the stage. Mr. KODAMA talked about his thoughts on the word “ganbaru,” which means making efforts to pursue one’s wish without anxiety, in the title of the promotion award and said, “Professor Kusunose is a leading authority in his field. His laboratory, where cutting-edge research is conducted, provides an outstanding environment for students to engage with the forefront of scientific advancement.,” placing expectations on him.

Upon receiving the award, Professor Kusunose said, “Rather than first considering whether something will be useful, I believe it is best when the things I enjoy working on ultimately prove to be of value. I take this award as recognition of the effort and attitude I have been putting into my work. Encouraged by this honor, I intend to continue doing my best in my future research endeavors.”
