Apr. 08, 2025

Lecture by Ms. Lee Nanee, Ewha Womans University

On March 6, Meiji University Library held a lecture entitled ”Open Access Situation in Korea” at Izumi Library Hall as part of the FY2024 Open Access Acceleration Project .

Meiji University is implementing various projects to promote open access, which allows free access to academic information on the Internet, through the FY2024 Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Open Access Acceleration Project Grant . The lecture was held in a format that was open to people outside the university so that they could learn more about the open access situation in Korea, and about 80 people attended the lecture, including online and on-site participants.

After a speech by MAKINO Atsushi, Deputy Director of the Meiji University Library (Professor of School of Arts and Letters), Ms. Lee Nanee of Ewha Womans University Library gave a lecture. Ms. Lee Nanee described the negotiation system and content of conversion contract (a contract that combines a journal subscription contract and an APC fee for submitting articles) in Korea, and the challenges facing academic libraries.

Next, Mr. Kim Wan Jong of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information gave a lecture on the movement of open access in Korea and AccessON, the national open access support system. Finally, SUZUKI Kai, Associate Professor of the School of Arts and Letters, gave a lecture on the research environment in Korea. After the lectures, the speakers commented on the questions raised, and a panel discussion was held.

Through this lecture, it became clear that the national support system for open access is better in Korea than in Japan. In addition, while the system is very different from that in Japan, where universities and research institutes individually work toward promotion, it was found that there are common issues in the promotion.

Meiji University will continue to promote open access by supporting APC and enhancing the functions of the academic achievement repository (Meiji Repository), aiming to return research results to society.
