TANAKA Tomoaki Laboratory, Department of Architecture, School of Science and Technology, together with Nihon Gakuen, which will become Meiji University Setagaya Junior and Senior High School in 2026, held a presentation on the collaborative project at Izumi Campus Learning Square on March 15.

The school building of Nihon Gakuen was designed by its graduate and renowned architect IMAI Kenji and others, and is located on a lush green campus centered on Building No. 1, which is registered as a tangible national cultural property. As Nihon Gakuen becomes an affiliated school of Meiji University and becomes a co-educational school at the same time, part of the school building is planned to be extended and renovated, so TANAKA Laboratory conceived a project to preserve the current school building with memories for the future utilizing 3D measurement technology such as 3D scanners.

First- and second-year junior high school students from Nihon Gakuen and undergraduate and graduate students from Meiji University worked together on this project. Through their activities since August last year, they have been able to create three-dimensional data of Building No. 1, the White House, a wooden school building which will be demolished, and their favorite places.

At the presentation held at the Center Agora in Izumi Learning Square, 18 students from Nihon Gakuen who participated in the project made presentations for each activity group. In their presentations, the outline of their activities, the characteristics of the campus, and the realization through their activities were presented. Three commentators from both schools were invited for questions and comments. On the day of the presentation, Nihon Gakuen officials and parents also attended. They deepened their cooperation in preparation for the start of the school as an affiliated school in about a year’s time.

TANIGUCHI, Vice-principal of Nihon Gakuen , who supported the project from the beginning, said as follows: “Professor TANAKA, who has a connection with Nihon Gakuen, proposed this project, and I am grateful to him for giving the students of Nihon Gakuen a valuable experience. On the day of the presentation, the Center Agora looked like a square where citizens gathered, just like the ancient Greek agoras. The presentations proceeded in an open atmosphere with passing students watching, and I felt that a rich time was flowing.”
