Feb. 14, 2025

The 97th All Japan Student Ice Sports Championships (Intercollegiate Competition) took place at Kose Sports Park Ice Arena (Kofu City, Yamanashi) from January 6 (Monday) to 7 (Tuesday), 2025.

In the individual event, SATO Shun (a third-year student, School of Political Science and Economics) won the men’s levels 7 and 8, and SUMIYOSHI Rion (a third-year student, School of Commerce) won the women’s levels 7 and 8, respectively. In the team event, SATO Shun took the title, Captain OSHIMA Kosho (a fourth-year student, School of Political Science and Economics) placed sixth, and KIKUCHI Ryusei (a second-year student, School of Political Science and Economics) finished eighth. The men’s team achieved a stunning victory.

SATO shun spectacularly won the Intercollegiate Competition for first time in two years

SATO Shun made a quadruple toe loop at the beginning of the short program and earned a high grade of execution. His combination jumps with a triple lutz and a triple toe loop were unfortunately judged to be under-rotated. However, all his spins achieved Level 4, the highest degree of difficulty, and he marked 92.97 points to make first place. In the free skating, although he succeeded in the opening combination jumps with a quadruple toe loop and a triple toe loop without any mistakes, he unluckily fell during the subsequent quadruple flip. Later, however, his quadruple toe loop earned a high grade of execution, and he impressively won the title for the first time in two years with 243.64 points overall.

OSHIMA Kosho competed in his last Intercollegiate Competition as Captain. In the short program, he made a triple Axel at the beginning and earned a high grade of execution. In the free skating, he stunningly landed after each of his jumps, securing the sixth place overall.

KIKUCHI Ryusei competed in his second Intercollegiate Competition, and he succeeded in the combination jumps with triple Axels without any mistakes at the beginning of the free skating. He moved up two positions from the short program, securing the eighth place overall.

With the remarkable results of SATO’s victory and OSHIMA and KIKUCHI’s rankings, the men’s team took the title in the team event.

SUMIYOSHI Rion succeeded in the opening double Axel and the subsequent combination jumps in the short program and marked 64.40 points to make first place. In the free skating, she landed all her jumps, and all her spins also earned Level 4 as a high grade of execution. She won her first title with 192.29 points overall.

EGAWA Maria (a third-year student, School of Political Science and Economics) achieved fourth-place ranking, and MOTOE Aiko (a second-year student, School of Commerce) placed 12th.
EGAWA, who had started in fifth place in the short program, earned additional points for the opening triple lutz. She moved up one position to finish 4th place.

MOTOE, who had just failed to advance to the free skating last year, succeeded in the opening combination jumps with a triple Salchow and a double toe loop, marking her best score of the season and finishing 12th.

With SUMIYOSHI’s victory along with EGAWA and MOTOE’s excellent performances, the women’s team finished second and finally took the podium, which they had missed last year.
