The Meiji University Museum was accredited under the Museum Act on December 23, 2024.
The accreditation system defined by the Act grants legal status to museums. The board of education of each prefecture or designated city evaluates museums based on the following criteria: appropriate facilities and equipment for storing and utilizing materials, placement of required staff, and well-developed business plans and achievements. Under the previous Museum Act, only local governments, incorporated foundations, and religious corporations were eligible for accreditation. However, the Act was revised in April 2022, introducing a new system that expanded eligibility to include educational corporations.
The Meiji University Museum, previously designated as “a facility equivalent to an accredited museum,” submitted an application to the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education and was officially accredited.
