As part of efforts to promote internationalization of Meiji University, the Headquarters of International Collaboration has implemented a training program for faculty to give lectures on specialized subjects in English. The 4th training program was held on January 24 under the theme “Pedagogical Approaches to Teaching in English: Educational Theory and Practice.” Professor Jacqueline McCafferty of Temple University delivered the lecture in an online format.
During the session, Professor McCafferty introduced the concept of scaffolding, which supports learners’ comprehension, as well as translanguaging, a strategic approach that integrates students’ first language and English to enhance learning. She also presented practical methods, including the use of generative AI for vocabulary organization and teaching material development, and emphasized the importance of visual support before and after class sessions.
Participants shared positive feedback, commenting, “It was my first time learning about the concept of scaffolding, and I found it extremely useful for my future teaching,” and “I realized that the real challenge in teaching in English lies not in the language itself, but in how to distinguish between content and language and design learning plans that meet students’ needs.”
The Headquarters of International Collaboration will continue to offer a variety of faculty development programs in support of the university’s ongoing internationalization efforts.
