Utsuho monogatari, 20 volumes

Volume 1, “Toshikake”

Utsuho monogatari, composed in the latter half of the tenth century during the mid-Heian period, is Japan’s oldest full-length narrative tale. Its first half centers on Kiyohara Toshikage and his grandson Nakatada and tells the story of the transmission of a secret tradition of koto playing. The second half offers a realistic portrayal of aristocratic society through stories of courtship and love. This set is an early Edo-period manuscript copy of the work.

Meiji University Library makes parts of its distinctive collections, including rare and semi-rare books, available through its digital archive. The archive can be accessed by users both within and outside the University.
