The work is a three-dimensional realization of the Penrose triangle, an impossible figure introduced by British scientists Lionel Penrose and Roger Penrose. It employs curved surfaces to create an optical illusion. Although it is an actual three-dimensional object, when viewed from a particular direction, it appears to form a shape that cannot exist in reality.
Distinguished Professor Emeritus SUGIHARA analyzes the mechanisms behind optical illusions using mathematical methods and creates 3D optical illusion works in which the brain perceives shapes that cannot exist in reality. His works have also gained recognition as art, having been selected for the Sculpture Division of the Nika Art Exhibition for four consecutive years, from the 106th exhibition in 2022 through the 109th exhibition in 2025.

A 3D optical illusion is a phenomenon in which the human brain perceives an actual three-dimensional object as a shape that cannot exist in reality. In a two-dimensional optical illusion, the artist depicts an impossible shape. In a 3D optical illusion work, however, it is the viewer who perceives the impossible shape. Such works sre therefore not simply an extension of painting. I am also devoting considerable effort to creating illusion art, based on the view that it can become a new form of artistic expression.
