The Organization for International Collaboration dispatched two Meiji University students to the Mexico Office of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) as interns for one month in August. This year, KANEKO K[A1.1]atsura, a fourth-year student in the School of Political Science and Economics, and MATSUMURA Rit[A2.1]su, a fourth-year student in the School of Arts and Letters, participated in the internship. In addition to public relations and other office duties, the students conducted research on projects being implemented by the office.

As part of the internship, MATSUMURA and KANEKO visited Mexico’s Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) to observe a myoelectric prosthetic hand development project. In this project, JICA volunteers and students and researchers in Mexico are working together to develop a myoelectric prosthetic hand that can be used by more people. The two students visited the development site. By speaking with those involved in the project, the students learned how international cooperation is advanced through collaboration with local engineers and community members. Furthermore, in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan in Mexico, the students shared information about the project with audiences in both Japan and Mexico through social media.

Through this experience, the students learned the importance of not only observing international cooperation in action but also reflecting on and organizing the information they obtained on-site and communicating it in their own words.

|JICA Mexico Office – Meiji University Internship Program

This activity was conducted as part of the JICA Mexico Office – Meiji University Internship Program, which is based on a memorandum of understanding between the JICA Mexico Office and Meiji University.

Based at the JICA Mexico Office in Mexico City, students conduct research on topics of their own choosing. Through hands-on learning that includes research, observation, and communication in the field of international cooperation, the program aims to deepen students’ understanding of international cooperation and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while helping them develop the perspectives and practical skills needed to play an active role globally.
