“Obsidian and the Sea” 刊行のお知らせ
ドイツ考古学研究所（German Archaeological Institute）の出版部局である iDAI.publications から、“Obsidian and the Sea: Evidence, Concepts and Social Implications of its Maritime Transportation” が刊行されました。
本書の第6章には、池谷信之特任教授（COLS副センター長）とミズーリ大学考古科学研究所の Michael D. Glascock 博士による共著論文「Marine Transportation of Obsidian from Kozushima Island」が掲載されています。
本論文では、旧石器時代初期に神津島産黒曜石が海を越えて愛鷹山麓へ運ばれていたことを、中部・関東地方10か所の黒曜石原産地資料90点と、愛鷹山麓から出土した黒曜石製石器10点を対象とする中性子放射化分析（NAA）によって検証しています。
これまで神津島産黒曜石の原産地推定は主に蛍光X線分析（XRF）によって行われてきましたが、より高い分解能をもつ分析手法によってその結果が裏付けられたことで、旧石器時代における海上渡航という重要な歴史的事象を、より確かな考古学的根拠に基づいて論じることが可能となりました。
