Finding accommodation in Tokyo

Finding your accommodation in Tokyo

This page contains information for students who will be arranging their own accommodation during their exchange program.
Accommodation type and contract terms (e.g., rent, contract period) will vary depending on the property, so be sure to check your budget and what kind of property you want before looking for housing.
The rent in Tokyo with easy access to each campus is higher than average, and it is said to be between 70,000 and 120,000 yen/month for a studio apartment (approximately 20㎡).
Furthermore, most properties for single people have a unit bath, where the bathroom and toilet are combined. Please note that rent for properties with separate bathrooms and toilets is often higher than for properties with unit baths.

Location Check how long it takes to get to each Meiji University campus and how you will commute by train.
Rent in central Tokyo is high, so many students commute from outside the city. It is said that the average commuting time for Japanese students is about 30 to 60 minutes.
Deposit & Key Money When you exchange the rental contract with the property manager, you will need to pay a deposit and key money in addition to rent and contract fees, which are generally about the same amount as your 1 or 2 months’ rent.
Deposits are usually refunded when you move out, but key money (a gratuity paid to the landlord) is not refunded under any circumstances.
Meals When moving into a student dormitory or student apartment, you may be able to choose a plan that includes meals.
However, if you have allergies or are vegetarian, please confirm whether they can accommodate your needs before applying.
Furniture & Appliances When renting a property, check whether furniture and appliances are included.
If you need to provide your own furniture and appliances, remember that you will also need to arrange for disposal when moving out.
