On April 6, an exchange event, "Meiji Meet-Up", facilitated by Meiji students, was held for privately financed international students, and exchange students, coming to Japan for the 2024 academic year.

As many as 276 international students registered in advance, and the spacious venue on the second floor of the Academy Common building at the SURUGADAI Campus was filled with fresh-faced, smiling students. The event was MC’d in English by Takumi Hagiwara (4th year, Faculty of Political Science and Economics) and Anri Suzuki (2nd year, Faculty of Law). All the participants took advantage of this special occasion to deepen personal exchanges through games, self-introductions, and other activities.

The event was organized by six on-campus organizations and groups: Campus Mate, Supporters from Political Science and Economics, the Student Committee of the School of Global Japanese Studies, MuBO (The Meiji University Borderless Organization), the Japanese Language Cafe (The Noriko Kurosaki Seminar, School of Commerce), and the Chinese Students Association. This event also served as an opportunity for these groups to share their experiences.

The "Welcome Reception for New International Students" hosted by the International Student Center followed the exchange event. The party started with welcoming speeches and toasts by Professor Kyoko KOMA, Vice President for International Exchange, and Professor Hideki ETO, Director of the International Student Center. Thanks in part to the exchange event held before the welcome reception, the atmosphere was very friendly from the start, both among new international students and between new students and senior students, and the time for enjoying pleasant conversation flew by in a flash.

During the latter half of the welcome party, Ms. Asli Novita Yasmin (Graduate School of Letters, Arts and Sciences), a Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship student from Indonesia, gave a talk as the representative of the new international students and explained how she came to consider studying in Japan, her ambitions for her time at the University, and she gave a message of support to the new students. Finally, the Meiji University Athletic Association Cheer Leading Squad gave a performance and cheered on the international students. The welcome reception ended with the singing of the school song by everyone in the hall.

All of us involved sincerely hope that this exchange event and welcome reception provided an opportunity for all the new international students to make many friends and get off to a good start in their future student life.
