President Eric CARPANO, Vice Presidents Manuel JOBERT, Marc BONINCHI, and Gilles BONNET, Professor Julian BOUVARD, and Mr. Xiao Lucien YANG, of Jean Moulin-Lyon 3 University (Lyon City, France; hereinafter referred to as Lyon 3 University), which is a partner of the inter-university agreement, visited Surugadai Campus on November 22. They exchanged views on the expansion of student exchanges with President DAIROKUNO Kosaku, Vice President KOMURO Teruhisa (professor in the School of Law), Deputy Director, Headquarters of International Collaboration Susanne SCHERMANN (professor in the School of Law), Director, International Student Center KIKUCHI Masao (professor in the School of Business Administration), Deputy Director, International Student Center KOMA Kyoko (professor in the School of Information and Communication), and Senior Assistant Professor of International Collaboration NAKAYA Chiharu.
President DAIROKUNO expressed his gratitude for the visit to strengthen the partnership and introduced the long and strong ties between the university and Lyon, including the fact that MIYAGI Kozo, one of the founders of the university, studied French law at Lyon 3 University (formerly the University of Lyon) and obtained a bachelor’s degree in law. In order to create more opportunities for our students to become interested in and learn French, French culture and the city of Lyon, he proposed the development of courses in English in addition to French.
President CARPANO introduced a program for Japanese students to study French language, French culture and European political economy, complete with a Japanese speaking buddy system. In addition, because many French students are currently learning Japanese at Lyon 3 University, there was a request for more opportunities for student exchange, so they agreed to continue discussions.
After the meeting, a working lunch was held at Yashiro Misao HALL in Liberty Tower. President DAIROKUNO led the group to a special room, where a commemorative photo was taken in front of the Bizen ware works of FUJIWARA Yu (1932-2001), a graduate of the university and a Living National Treasure. The visit ended in a friendly atmosphere throughout.
Since the academic year 2010, Meiji University has accepted 29 exchange students from Lyon 3 University, and two students have also been studying at Meiji University during the fall semester of 2023.
