International exchange (media) - On-location shooting experience in NZ

May 16, 2024

The School of Information and Communication conducted an active learning media literacy course jointly organized with Fuji Television Network, Inc. (hereinafter, “Fuji TV”) as a subject established by the School. Twenty-one students (19 students from the School of Information and Communication, one from the School of Arts and Letters, and one from the School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences) participated in this event.

It took a total of 16 days for this program: three days of pre-training, seven days of overseas shooting in Auckland, northern New Zealand, five days of post-training, and one day of shooting in Fuji TV studios. The program, under the guidance of a professional director, produced a program that imitated Kokoshira, one of the segments in Mezamashi TV, a Fuji TV morning show.

During the pre-training, they learned how to use a camera and make a TV show, and carefully planned and prepared for the on-location shooting in groups.

Each group shot their own theme on location in Auckland, New Zealand.

Group 1: Life in NZ (tradition and lifestyle culture)
Group 2: Japan in NZ
Group 3: Sports in NZ
Group 4: Recommended spots and meals for university students in NZ

Each member assumed a role of shooting/assistant director, shooting reporter, or cameraperson, and worked to create better videos.
They actively engaged in conducting previews of the places to cover, interviews on streets, and field reports.

After the shooting, while transcribing the interview, they produced and composed a draft of the TV show based on the interview content.
The video production also provided valuable opportunities to experience New Zealand’s culture and its differences.

On March 15, they created the TV show using videos prepared with a lot of time. In addition to the newscasters who appeared in the show, the students worked behind the scenes at the show, including as cameraperson, assistant director, narrator and floor director.
Many students were nervous about their first experience and did not get used to it, but under the guidance of professionals, they gradually came to be able to work with peace of mind.
Like the other side of creating a real TV show, all the participants played their roles in creating a TV show.

Through the implementation of the program conducted in foreign places and a Fuji TV studio, we were able to learn the difficulty and interest of communicating what we want to convey and what we should be careful about when transmitting information from the perspective of not only the recipient of information but also the sender of information.

【Comment from students who participated in the program】
I was able to have a valuable experience that is hard to have anywhere else, from planning the content and structure of the show from the start, interviewing overseas, to filming on a full scale.

There were some hard parts, but most of all, I got to know the people I worked with very well in a short period of time, and I was able to connect with many people.

I thought it would be a good idea to participate in this program if you have some interest in it!

To be honest, at first I was very anxious to spend a week with members whom I met only three days before, but I was able to live the best life in New Zealand because I felt so good with everyone. I enjoyed this program so much with a lot of free time while filming for the video production. A week was not enough.

Even now that it has been a long time since I returned home, it was such a good week that I want to go back. I had experiences that I would not normally have and made many friends. If you have any interest in this program, I recommend you give it a try. I have such wonderful memories of this program!
