Presentation by Professor Serena BEST
Meiji University International Institute for Materials with Life Functions (research representative: Professor AIZAWA Mamoru, School of Science and Technology) held a symposium on March 5 at Building No.2 of Ikuta Campus. About 60 undergraduate and graduate students as well as general applicants attended the symposium.
The symposium has been held every year since 2018, when the Institute was a research cluster, as a group to consider next-generation biomaterials. In recent years, the symposium has been organized under the title of “Materials with life functions: how to bring artificial materials to life”. This year’s first lecture was presented by Professor Serena BEST of the University of Cambridge, a prominent biomaterials pioneer.
Professor Serena BEST described biomaterials for the repair of hard and soft tissues under the title “Biomaterial Scaffolds for Hard and Soft Tissue Repair.” Regarding biomaterials for repairing hard tissues, Professor BEST explained the effects of various functional ions while overviewing the history of about 50 years mainly on calcium phosphate-based ceramics. As for biomaterials for repairing soft tissues, collagen was basically explained, and the relationship between its microstructure and tissue regeneration was discussed. In the question-and-answer session with the participants, professors from Tohoku University and Tokyo Medical and Dental University, as well as graduate students, asked specific questions about research cases, indicating that the participants were taking a deep interest in her presentation.
