The SusHi Tech Tokyo 2024 Global Startup Program was held at Tokyo Big Sight from May 15 to 16. The Student Pavilion was set up in the event hall, and YAMAMOTO Kotaro (WATANABE Keita Laboratory), a fourth grade student of the Department of Frontier Media Science, won the top prize at the Pitch Contest.
This product was awarded for its affinity with the theme of this event, which is to create sustainable new value through technology, etc., and to transmit it from Tokyo to the world, and because it is a product that stands out from the user’s perspective.
At the event, Mr. YAMAMOTO introduced Trash Lens. Trash Lens is a smartphone app that lets you take a picture of an item you don’t know how to dispose of, and AI gives you an answer in five seconds. Trash Lens can detect features of items in captured images, provide local government information on how to dispose of them as well as suggest ways to reuse or upcycle them, finding their value as a resource. This provides a method of discarding something that reduces the environmental load and maximizes the value of items. As the trash separation becomes more complicated, Trash Lens aims to realize a society where everyone can utilize resources better without having to be aware of it.
