[School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences, Graduate School of Advanced Mathematical Sciences] SAIGO, MORIMOTO, and Professor WATANABE win Interactive Presentation Award for Interaction 2025

May 01, 2025

At Interaction 2025, held at the Hitotsubashi Memorial Hall in the National Center of the Sciences Building, SAIGO Riki (3rd year undergraduate), MORIMOTO Kosuke (2nd year master’s student) in the Department of Frontier Media Science at the School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences / the Frontier Media Science Program (Interaction Design Laboratory (WATANABE Keita)) at the Graduate School of Advanced Mathematical Sciences, specializing in Advanced Media Sciences, and the Professor WATANABE Keita presented “Pen Shadow Haptics: A System for Providing Simulated Tactile Sensations using the Shadow of a Pen” and received the Interactive Presentation Award (public vote). They were also selected as a Premium Presentation through screening by the program committee.

Pen Shadow Haptics displays a virtual shadow of the pen on the display and deforms the shadow as if it were uneven, giving users tactile sensations as if they were actually touching uneven surfaces. Users can feel simulated tactile sensations based solely on visual information, such as the shadow of a pen. They also proposed a system that provides simulated tactile sensations by making the shadow of the pen bend and wave.
